During Winter, Munich offers attractive recreation offers
for inside and outside
There are sledging hills for the small and the big. The best are in Ostpark, next to the Bavaria statue, next to the Maximilianeum, on the Olympiaberg and on the Monopteros-Hügel. Frozen lakes and rivers invite, next to the classic ice sport centers, to ice skating. As a special highlight the Stachusbrunnen fountain is transformed into "ice magic" from November through January, an ice skating field for the small and the big, with rousing music, hot wine and currywurst sausage.
Romantic strolls through deeply snowy winter landscapes of the parks, at the Isar river or in the Englischer Garten. Here even in Winter on sunny days the beergardens open and one can, within snow and icicles, enjoy his Mass or hot wine at the Chinesische Turm or the Seehaus.
Highlight of the Winter season are of course the outdoor festivities. No matter if you visit the Artits market in Schwabing, the traditional market on the Marienplatz, or the big arts festival "Tollwood" with music and market stands.
Every year the Munich people take advantage of the numerous christmas markets of the city, the center of which is the Christkindlmarkt on the Marienplatz, which is known far beyond the borders of the Isar metropole. Besides almost every city district has its own Christmas market with individual flair and offers.
Also during Christmas things are going on. Here in Munich carnival is being celebrated intensively. From Carnival-Sunday through Carnival-Tuesday the so-called "Narren" dance in the pedestrian area. Highlight is the "Tanz der Marktweiber" on the last day of the carnival season on the Viktualienmarkt.
